It's the end of era as Eidos drops Core Design as the developers of future Tomb Raiders
The fallout from the Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness debacle continues as Brit developers Core Design - who have coded every one of the six Tomb Raider games - have dramatically been dropped by Lara publishers Eidos.
The bombshell came this morning as part of an Eidos trading statement, which announced, "In recognition of the company's need continually to enhance the value and maximise the commercial opportunity of its [Tomb Raider] franchise, for which all intellectual property rights belong to Eidos, the board has concluded that it will transfer development of the franchise to its Crystal Dynamics studio in the US."
Even more ominously for Core, Eidos also said that they "will now be evaluating the Core Design studio's on-going direction and contribution as part of the group's overall development capabilities."
Clearly, this comes as a direct result of not only the endless delays that plagued the release of Angel of Darkness but also the poor critical response the game received (PSM2 magazine, for instance, awarded the game just 58%).
