Ei niin, ettei tuo pätkä hienolta näyttäisi, mutta on hieman huonosti valittu kohtaus esittelypätkäksi. Koska kamera on koko ajan liikkeessä, koko ajan leikataan nopeasti ja lähikuvat ovat pannassa, ei kuvan erinomainen tarkkuus oikein pääse oikeuksiinsa.

Nyt kun tuo PS3:n Blu-Ray varmistui, eikä muista konsoleista löydy edes HD-DVD:tä, en kyllä povaa HD-DVD:lle kovin ruusuista tulevaisuutta.

TDK develops 2X, 100GB Blu-ray Disc prototype

TDK Corp. has developed a prototype Blu-ray Disc that can store twice as much data, and record it at twice the speed, as existing Blu-ray Discs.

The disc, unveiled at a TDK exhibition in Tokyo this week, can record data at 72Mbps (bits per second), double the 36Mbps rate for current Blu-ray Discs. TDK increased the write speed by using a more powerful laser and making some changes to the material of the discs recording layer, said Nobuyuki Koike a spokesman for TDK.

The first generation of Blu-ray discs can already record data faster than it is transmitted in high-definition TV broadcasts, so the faster recording speed isnt needed there. But it will be advantageous when content is copied from a hard-disk drive to an optical disc for backup or archiving, said Koike.

The Blu-ray Disc Association, which is responsible for the disc formats, standardized a 2X version of the read-only BD-R disc and rewritable BD-RE disc in the latter half of 2004, said Taro Takamine, a spokesman for Sony Corp. in Tokyo. Sony is one of the major backers of the format.

To achieve the higher capacity, TDK added two additional recording layers to the disc to take it up to four layers. Blu-ray Disc stores 25GB on each recording layer and the standard currently includes single layer and dual layer versions.

No standard exists for four-layer discs and Koike said TDK is proposing its prototype to the Blu-ray Disc Association. Sonys Takamine said the current format road map calls for four-layer discs to debut in the market during 2007.

TDKs development comes hot on the heels of an announcement by Toshiba Corp. that it has developed a three-layer HD-DVD disc capable of holding up to 45GB of information. HD-DVD is a competing format to Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVDs maximum capacity of 30GB had been viewed unfavorably against Blu-ray Discs maximum 50GB capacity.

According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, a single-layer 25GB disc can typically hold 135 minutes of high-definition video in MPEG-2 format, with room for a further two hours of standard-definition video.

The recent Toshiba announcement brought the formats much closer together and made capacity less of an issue for the Blu-ray Disc camp to trumpet when promoting their technology. The development of a 100GB disc by TDK will likely open up this avenue for the Blu-ray Disc supporters again.

Sanyo Joins Blu-ray Group

Media NewsSanyo Electric has joined Blu-Ray group for a next-generation DVD format while remaining as a member of the rival HD-DVD group led by Toshiba Corp.

Sanyo, a core member of the Toshiba side, joined the Sony bloc in April, in order to provide key components for DVD players to both camps. Such components include Optical Pickup Units for blue-laser based devices. In fact, Sanyo has developed two versions of the component that can be used in Blu-Ray and HD-DVD readers.

Current plans of Sanyo, however, include the release of HD-DVD compliant players within this year.

Blu-ray Disc Leads in Early Format Match-up: Preferred by Consumers 4-to-1 Over HD-DVD

A new poll suggests that as the battle between Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD heats up, consumers overwhelmingly prefer Blu-ray Disc as their format of choice.

In the poll, conducted by Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, a nationally recognized strategic polling firm, consumers were given a side-by-side comparison of the two formats on the following dimensions: technology company support, Hollywood studio support, gaming console support, disc capacity, potential movie title availability and anticipated launch dates.

In this side-by-side format comparison, 58% of the 1,200 consumers surveyed preferred Blu-ray Disc, 26% were undecided and only 16% preferred HD-DVD. Of those consumers who indicated that they are extremely interested in purchasing the next-generation format, 66% favored Blu-ray, 19% were undecided and only 15% preferred HD-DVD.

Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. announced they will release its movies in Blu-ray format, in additional to HD-DVD format. Paramount Pictures Corp. had also made similar decision earlier this month.

Toshiban pomo elätteli vielä muutama päivä sitten toiveita yhdestä levyformaatista, mutta Sonyn mielestä se juna meni jo.

DVD Forum approves China's plans for next-gen DVD format

New format said to offer better definition and sound quality than Blu Ray and HD-DVD

DVD Forum, the international DVD standard authority, has given Chinese engineers the go-ahead to look into developing a next-generation DVD format to compete with Blu Ray and HD-DVD.

Last month China announced plans to develop its own format in a bid to eliminate the need to pay licensing fees to foreign companies. The DVD Forum has now agreed that a study can be carried out to test the feasibility of a China-only format, according to news network NewsFactor.

The format will be based on, though not compatible with, HD-DVD technology and is due for release in 2007. According to Lu Da of the government-backed National Disc Engineering Center, the format will offer higher definition, better sound quality and more effective means of combatting piracy than Blu Ray and HD-DVD.

It will also support Audio Video Coding Standard video compression technology, plus MPEG2, MPEG4 and Windows Media Video 9.

This is not the first time China has attempted to rival foreign formats with home-grown technology - in 2003 Enhanced Versatile Disc was launched to compete with DVD.

But although the government lent strong support to the project, a group of Chinese DVD player manufactuers launched legal action against the format developer and the new format failed to take off.

Saa nähdä kuinka nopeasti HD-levyt lyövät itsensä läpi. Vasta sitten aletaan tuomaan isoja julkaisuja kuten LotRit ja Starwarsit.

Missä formaatissa kuva on levyllä? Pitää olla täydet 1080p jotta muutamaa klassikkoa jaksaisi päivittää. :rolleyes:

Jeps, en itsekään oikein usko että kyse on ihan parista vuodesta... pikemminkin 5+ vuodesta. Tavallisella kaduntallaajalle dvd:tkin ovat yhä uusinta uutta, eipä näitä kuluttajia kiinnosta hankkia rutkasti kalliimpana jotakin josta eivät kuitenkaan ymmärrä.
Olihan Betakin parempilaatuista kuin VHS, mutta eipä tuo koskaan lyönyt itseään läpi...

Luulen, että tän HD-innostuksen veturina toimii nimenomaan litteät sisustukseen paremmin sopivat tv:t eikä niinkään parempi resoluutio. Naisethan tätä maailmaa oikeesti pyörittää :)
