From a likability point of view it makes sense that Valve
levels the field of play. Instead of satisfying only one team, they would satisfy the 5 of them. Hell even you're not one of the 30 players to win the games, most of us will be happy that
we're winning or that our team
won.
From a really simple mathematical standpoint.
On the last 48 hours Steam has averaged (summed the max and the min and divided by 2)5.8M concurrent users being the peak 7.2M.
Supposing players are assigned to a team to keep the balance of numbers in each team, there are 7.2M players distributed across 5 teams.
7.2M/5 = 1.44M in each team.
Now, the percentage of power users that buy everything that moves is reaaaaally low. Let's say that's 1% of the players (which is already a high percentage). That means there are 28k players in each team spending a lot of money.
For you to craft a badge at the moment (Summer badge) you either shop on the market for cards, you vote for the community choice or you buy games.
A summer badge gives 10 points. Each card is valued around 30 cents as of now. In order to craft the Summer badge you need 10 cards.
That averages 3€ per badge.
If points were based only on badges crafted (I'll leave alone the tokens since that would inflate even more the overall money spent), that would mean that
right now, Green team would have spent 140k€ while every other team would have spent nearly 70k €.
Let's assume (I don't have data on this), that 10% of the players on each team is spending money on cards. If it's 10% that means that
each player on the green team has spent 1000€ up to now. If it's 20% of the players on that team that would mean each one would have spent 500€. I also highly doubt that there is at least half of each team spending on cards. Again these are only assumptions, still, fairly logical.
Just add that up, day 3, 8h missing for the end of this day and people would have spent near half a million.
The fact that there are 4 teams, with nearly the same points is what amazes me. That means that everyone is spending almost the same money and that would
truly be highly unlikely.
And I highly doubt that in 3 days of sale there have been spent over 1.5M € just in badge crafting.
