In 2014, part of the 4A Games team opted to leave Ukraine because of the political instability in the country, opening up a studio in Malta, sensibly named 4A Malta. It was agreed that both 4A Malta and 4A Ukraine could use the technology that the original studio had created and perfected over the years.
They then set to work
on Metro Exodus, the most recent major game in the series and a fully joint venture.
In 2019, both studios had evolved to work independently of one another, and in 2020, 4A Games (Malta) was acquired by the Embracer Group. In an unrelated deal, 4A Games Ukraine secured undisclosed funding to work on La Quimera, which was just revealed by the team after almost five years of development.
In 2025, 4A Games Ukraine
revealed a rebrand, taking on the name and identity of Reburn and shedding the 4A Games label forevermore.
Going forward, both 4A Games and Reburn can use the 4A Engine, but they’re separately owned and work on projects that do not cross paths.
