Interview with Jens-Peter Kurup
I am proud to present our very first interview with the developer of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men.
I have asked Game Director Jens-Peter Kurup a couple of questions so that we may be a little more enlightened.
K&L Inside - So far we have seen footage from a club mission and an office building. Can you reveal or give a hint at any other places or environments we will find Kane & Lynch in?
Jens-Peter Kurup - Were still being secretive about the locations. But besides the locations you mention - the first level takes place an early morning in LA and theres a fairly spectacular action level in the streets you see down below when you rappel down the office building of Tokyo.
K&L I - The squad tactics in Freedom Fighters was based on three keys. Will you do the same for Kane & Lynch or have you come up with something else?
Kurup - Were working from the same core and the bread and butter is still based on the 3 button setup.
Its easy and fast to utilize in action and makes flanking and suppressing really fast. In the heat of battle the last thing we need is micromanagement of you crew.
Only button extension to the crew-control Is, that you can now choose to cycle to and give a specific crew member a specific command. Its mainly useful when they carry special weapons like snipers etc.
The system has mainly expanded inwards enhancing the behavior of the crew members when the buttons are pressed.
K&L I - We hear of destructable environments in the game. Will it be possible to use that for your own advantage such as shooting down structures that will crush your opponents?
Kurup - In general our destructive environment is used to remove a cover.
If an enemy is hiding behind a car let your men shoot at it until it leaks gas and the enemy will run before it explodes etc. Unfortunately it also goes the other way around. Hide behind something destructible against an enemy with lots of fire power and your cover wont be good for very long. We use it to give the player a chance to get into a scenario then hide for a short amount of time and then force him to move and think again. It keeps the pace of the game up quite well.
K&L I - Has there been any elements from the Hitman games that you thought was too actionpacked which you can now use for Kane & Lynch?
Kurup - There are some action scenarios that weve always wanted to do in Hitman but where they didnt really fit the concept some of them we get a chance to do in K&L.
The two games are conceptually different in their design approach to action.
In Kane and Lynch we want action. We want tons of smoke and we want thousands of bullets and we want Kane and Lynch to be totally cornered. In a well designed Hitman level you often want the player to avoid that kind of situations. Its two different fantasies, which we cater.
The main influence from Hitman is that its damn good at presenting civilian scenarios and making it believable- even when action breaks out. That, we copy a lot.
Kurup - Id like to use this opportunity to say that were grateful that a site like this exists.
Its very nice to know that people care about our work. On a more selfish note Im also looking forward to learning from your feedback on a longer term.
