"EA is looking to take the series to new heights with a new focus on skating, namely shaking defenders out of their dignity. "
"In NHL 08, the skating engine has been overhauled and you have complete analog control on the left stick, along with a ton of new skating animations to tie it all together. If you push the stick slightly, you'll slowly walk the puck forward. Jam it all the way to accelerate to top speed. The idea here is that there is strategy in skating, that there are more than the two speeds of stop and go.
In NHL 08, if you are skating forward and push the stick hard to the right, you'll stop and make a sharp cut to the right. It's a great way to avoid a hit, but you'll sacrifice speed in the process. If you roll the stick to the right, you'll go into a cross-over skating animation and make a wide, arching turn without losing much speed, a great way to take the puck behind your net and start the offensive attack. With this new system, individual skating ability will play a much bigger factor and speedsters like Martin St. Louis will shine."
"NHL 08 is about embarrassing overzealous defensemen in one-on-one situations. This time around you have the ability to separate the puck from your stick, tap it into space in any direction you like, regain possession and then take your chances with the goalie. - Here's how it works. It's a one-on-one matchup and the defender is bearing down on you. Moving the stick left or right won't help you because the defender is ready to knock you off the puck and on your duff. Quickly, you hold the left bumper, or L1 on the PS3, and tap the right stick up and to the right. Your player taps the puck past the defender to the right. At the same time, you skate to the left to avoid the big hit, grab the puck on the other side and continue the break."
"As for Franchise, EA will insert some depth that the mode lacked in 07. Instead of unrealistic mini-games, you'll run the same drills that professional hockey teams run -- five on zero, five on two, power play, penalty kill, rush drills, working the offensive zone. And with the skill stick, you can play through the All Star skills competition."
"Visually, NHL 08 will keep pace with other EA Sports titles this year and hit the 60 frames-per-second mark"
