PS2 MODEMS, MODEMS EVERYWHERE
Sales over expectations and doubling output
While the pazzazz of Xbox Live is ramping up in response to the mere whimper of the launch of GameCube's modem and broadband adapter, Sony has decided to get in on the action by crowing about sales in the States. Serious sales.
Sony sold over 500,000 PS2 modems, topping its forecast by doubling what it expected to flog when it started selling the adapters in August.
To cope with the demand, Sony said it would double shipments and intends to sell a whopping 1 million before the end of March.
The PS2 adapter offers a choice of dial-up or broadband connections, but Sony said 58 percent of users were playing via broadband and it is adding 2,500 new online gamers a day.
This holds with Sony's announcement this week that the PS2 online shoot 'em-up SOCOM: US Navy SEALs sold over a million copies in America with more than a third of registered players being actively online.
Although the online aspect hasn't been a cornerstone of Sony's PS2 marketing blitz, it is for the Xbox - and such news bodes well for Microsoft which 'officially' launches Xbox Live on Friday. SCEE must be rubbing its hands for a June launch in the UK, as for Nintendo? It doesn't seem that bothered.
