Anti lock brakes
When you lock up the wheels from excessive pedal pressure, you have no steering, the point of MAXIMUM braking is at the limit of the wheel before it stops turning. ABS (antilock Braking Systems) rapidly compare road speed to wheel rotation speed and pulse the hydraulic fluid to maintain this point of maximum braking. The quicker the sensors in judging the two input speeds the better the stopping distance. NOTE a Good driver, in theory should be able to stop a car in a shorter distance than ABS ! As every "off" pulse is a short distance extra in stopping.

For example, ABS braking is deleted, as is the electric windows and such items as the spare wheel carrier and standard alloy wheels. You will have to sing as there is no radio. Effectively, many of the parts which you dont require on a rally car will already be taken out of this donor car or a lower specification part fitted due to it being surplus to requirements and about to be replaced with a competition fitting.

Subaru have fitted its 2001 Impreza WRX World Rally Car with six pot (ie. Six callipers) cross drilled and ventilated brakes combined with a water cooling system in order to retard the onset of fade. The reason they have chosen this system is because Ceramic brakes dont last very long and cannot take the punishment encountered by rally cars on the excuses for roads they more usually compete on. This system is apparently very effective and I will be watching the cars progress during the remainder of the year to see just how effective these brakes are in competition.

He said: "When the wheels start to lock the ABS releases the brakes and they are no longer slowing you down.
"Using the brakes properly is far more effective. Rally drivers never use ABS."
