In a straight console vs. console shootout, the refinements and the value added to the PlayStation 3 game make it the version to buy if you're in the position to be able to choose between them. In terms of the complete package you get for your cash, you simply can't argue with a free copy of the PC and Mac version of the game [Updated: Portal 2 is a Steamplay title and redeeming the code unlocks both computer versions] and the idea of being able to play co-op with any one on PSN or Steam regardless of format is clearly a big step forward.
Conclusion: In the end it is the 360 version comes out the winner of this Head2Head. Most differences in the game are to small to matter but there is no denying that the graphical aspect of the 360 version looks a little more realistic. However PS3 owners shouldn’t feel bad about this outcome as their version will still have the extra content with Kratos as an exclusive character. Both versions also look great so you really can’t go wrong with either version. Would you rather have the exclusive character of the PS3 version or would you prefer the slightly more realistic appearance of the 360 version? While the winner of this Head2Head is clear, the final decision of which version to buy might not be based on the person in this case.
Conclusion: While players will be happy overall with either version, there is no doubt that the PS3 version takes the win on this H2H. However while Portal 2 just looks better all around on the PS3 in more than one aspect, both versions performed well and will provide a unique experience for the anyone to enjoy. It is worth noting however, even though it had no impact on the final result, that not only was the PS3 version the winner of this H2H but it also has an extra feature that the 360 version lacks. This is of course the ability to play online with PC gamers via steam as opposed to being restricted to only one online network of players. While XBL players will have no problem finding a partner for co op, it is nice to be able to play along side friends who happen to prefer PC gaming over consoles.
Conclusion: In the end it was really so obvious who won this H2H that a conclusion section seems rather pointless. Even so, results are results and it must be said. The PS3 version simply smoked the 360 version hands down. If you only own a 360, I’m sure you will have just as bad a time playing this game as you would on the PS3 (refer to our infocus about the game). But if you own both consoles then the ps3 version is surely the one to buy and with PSN back up for online play just in time, you won’t miss out on anything by getting the winning version of this H2H.
The Xbox 360 version remains the same (our measurement comes in at 1040x608 with 2x MSAA) but it appears to be the case that the PS3 game has been reduced to 960x544, again with 2x MSAA.
Conclusion: So as you can see, the underdog of this battle fared pretty well. After Final Fantasy 13 many people didn’t think that a once PS3 exclusive spanned across 3 disks for the 360 could come as close as it did, but the final result has proven us all wrong. In the end however it was the PS3 version that came out on top, even if just slightly. Both games had their pros and cons in the visual department in addition to performing very well to boot. When it came down to it however, the much more realistic look provided by the SSAO of the PS3 version seals the deal.
The effect is definitely implemented in both Xbox 360 and PlayStation3 versions of L.A. Noire but to somewhat different effect. The PS3 game seems to have a larger occlusion radius, resulting in a significant over-darkening effect while in many scenes the 360 version is barely noticeable (but it is definitely there).
Lopputulema on, että vaikka L.A. Noire on hieno kokemus kummallakin alustalla, on yhdellä BD-levyllä tuleva PS3-versio kokonaisuutena parempi valinta. It's fair to say there are performance issues in both releases, but there remains an undeniable perception that the PS3 game holds up better under stress. To test this out we carried out two different analyses: first, we compared the game running identical video, with an emphasis on combining the high polygon characters with resource-intensive exterior scenes. In the second test we compared gameplay from the same sections of the game.
In the final analysis, L.A. Noire on PlayStation 3 is the one to get. It's smoother, it seems to have fewer streaming bugs, and of course there's no disc swapping. However, factoring in the enormity of the game, it's a credit to Team Bondi that the Xbox 360 version is as close as it is, and so long as you're aware of the gameplay issues and annoyances that Oli covered off in the L.A. Noire Eurogamer review, it's a great buy regardless of the console you own.
Aside from differences in anti-aliasing, gamma balance, foliage and the size of the borders (!) on replays and cut-scenes, Codemasters has produced a very similar looking game on both platforms.
Vaikka teknisillä arvoilla mitattuna Xbox 360 -versio viekin voiton, ovat konsoliveljekset kokonaisuutena tasaväkisiä. Sen sijaan PC-serkku tulee ja nousee podiumin keskikorokkeelle, kunhan koneesta vaan löytyy tarpeeksi vääntöä.While DiRT 3 is very similar in this regard, performance appears to have been improved in some respects. A capped 30FPS update has been targeted once again, but there does appear to have been some optimisation to the point where the Xbox 360 version looks to all intents and purposes as though it is v-synced, with tearing only ever surfacing in only the rarest of situations. PS3 also appears to have improved in this regard over its predecessor, but it is still noticeable when things get really busy.
On the whole though, performance in DiRT 3 is rather good on both formats. As our findings demonstrate, the 360 version of DiRT 3 is the technically the superior of the two versions, but in practice this difference accounts for very little in tangible gameplay terms across the overall run of play - DiRT 3 is a highly playable, visually stunning release, and comes highly recommended on both formats.
The Xbox 360 version of Duke Nukem Forever is nothing short of unmitigated disaster in this area, and easily one of the ugliest and most poorly performing shooting games we've tested in quite some time.
Quite why the Microsoft console has such a poor version of the game is something of a mystery. Duke Nukem Forever runs on what appears to be a very, very old Unreal Engine platform, and traditionally Epic's tech simply seems to play more nicely with the Xbox 360 architecture, designed from the ground up to be easy for PC developers to get to grips with. It may simply be the case that Piranha has better PlayStation 3 coders in-house, but regardless, the difference is substantial. On PS3, Duke Nukem Forever doesn't suddenly become a good game, but at least the game's positive elements are showcased in a somewhat better light.
